Internships: See State Government in Action
The Massachusetts State Senate is the second oldest democratic deliberative assembly in the world.  It has been home to future presidents, groundbreaking civil rights movements, fervent debates, and qualified, mature student interns.

The opportunity to work directly with legislative staff, participate in the daily operations of a state legislative office and watch the inner workings of state government all create an exciting internship experience for college students interested in government and public policy issues.

Senator Pacheco has internship positions available during the school year and in the summer.

Program

The time commitment is 10 to 15 hours per week. All positions are unpaid. Your school may offer academic credit. Please check with your academic advisor for more information.

Expectations and Duties

Maturity, tact and patience are the prime personal qualifications for State House interns.  Qualified applicants should also possess strong writing and verbal communications skills, and the ability to prioritize work on concurrent projects. Above all, interns are expected to be responsible and politically cognizant.

Interns will usually assist staff in the following areas:

  • Constituent services: Respond to constituent requests for information or assistance. Constituent service is a primary part of the office's work, and interns will have frequent contact with constituents, either by phone or in person.
  • Legislative research and support: Attend committee hearings, briefings and other events. Conduct research and analysis of legislation and policy issues.
  • Clerical and general office tasks: Open, sort and distribute mail, answer phones, and run errands.
